BA Interior Architecture and Design
About this course
Interior architecture and design is concerned with the design of interior spaces, shaping the environments in which people live, work, shop, and socialise. It is distinct from interior decoration in that it engages with the structural and spatial organisation of buildings as well as their aesthetic treatment, requiring practitioners to understand how built spaces can be reconfigured, how services and circulation are organised, and how the interaction between light, material, and form creates atmosphere and function. The discipline draws on architectural thinking, spatial design, and an understanding of how people experience and use the built environment. At the University of Bedfordshire, this three-year full-time programme is supported by professional connections with the British Institute of Interior Design, the Royal Institute of Architects, and BREEAM, the world's leading certification system for sustainably built environments. These connections give the programme a strong professional dimension and a commitment to sustainable design practice. You will study spatial design, materials and finishes, technical drawing and construction, digital modelling, lighting design, and the history and theory of interior design, developing both creative and technical capabilities. You will work across a range of projects from residential and commercial interiors to hospitality and public spaces, building a portfolio that demonstrates your design thinking and technical competence. The ability to visualise and communicate spatial concepts is central to the programme throughout. Graduates go on to work as interior architects and designers in architectural practices, specialist interior design studios, furniture and specification companies, retail and hospitality design, and set design. Many pursue professional membership of the British Institute of Interior Design or pursue further qualifications in architecture. Postgraduate study in interior design, architecture, or sustainable design is an option for those wishing to develop specialist expertise.
