About this course

Integrated natural sciences is a degree concept that takes seriously the artificial nature of the boundaries between the traditional scientific disciplines. The most important questions in contemporary science, from the molecular basis of disease to the physics of the climate system to the emergence of intelligence in biological and artificial systems, do not respect the divisions between biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. They require scientists who can think across these fields, applying the tools of one to the problems of another and understanding the deep connections between approaches that are often taught in isolation. At the University of Warwick this four-year, full-time MSci programme is designed to teach you to frame and solve scientific problems without the constraint of disciplinary boundaries. You will develop a strong foundation in mathematics and the core sciences before specialising in the combinations and applications that interest you most, guided by the university's research-intensive scientific culture. The extended four-year format culminating in a master's degree means you engage with research and advanced scientific thinking throughout the programme, developing the capacity to contribute to original scientific work before you graduate. The programme is genuinely unique in its ambition to produce scientists who are fluent across traditional disciplinary boundaries rather than deep in one while merely competent in others. Graduates of integrated natural science programmes are well positioned for research careers in science, whether in academia or in the research and development arms of pharmaceutical, biotech, materials, energy and technology companies. The breadth of scientific thinking the degree develops also transfers well to careers in science communication, policy, technology consultancy, finance and data science, where the ability to think across domains is increasingly prized. Many graduates continue to doctoral research, building on the MSci foundation to pursue questions at the frontiers of interdisciplinary science.
