BA Illustration
About this course
Illustration is a discipline that sits at the intersection of art, communication, and storytelling. At its best it does something no other visual medium does quite as well: it translates ideas, emotions, and narratives into images that can reach audiences across contexts, from children's books and editorial work to political commentary, scientific visualisation, and animation. The illustrator must be both a skilled visual maker and a precise communicator, understanding not just how to create images but how images carry meaning and speak to particular audiences. At Portsmouth this three-year full-time programme combines traditional and contemporary illustration techniques in a way that prepares you for the breadth of the field. You will work with traditional sketching, digital drawing, relief printmaking, bookbinding, zine-making, and animation, developing technical range and the critical understanding to make informed choices about which approach best serves a given problem. The programme emphasises learning through making, which means experimentation is built into the culture of the course rather than treated as an occasional diversion. You will develop as an adaptable and socially informed practitioner who understands both the craft and the broader context in which illustration operates. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to spend time working in a professional setting and building your portfolio and industry contacts. A year abroad is also available, allowing you to study at an international partner institution and encounter different creative traditions and working cultures. Work placement experience is integrated throughout, ensuring that professional awareness develops alongside your creative practice. Graduates of illustration programmes work as freelance illustrators, in publishing, animation studios, advertising agencies, graphic design, games and interactive media, education, and arts organisations. Building a strong portfolio and professional network during your studies is central to establishing yourself in the field, and many graduates continue to postgraduate study in illustration, animation, or related creative disciplines.
