About this course

Illustration is the art of communicating ideas, stories and emotions through image-making, deployed across an extraordinary range of contexts from children's books and editorial illustration to concept art for games, film and television, advertising, scientific visualisation and graphic novels. It is a discipline that demands both technical craft and conceptual intelligence, requiring the ability to interpret a brief or generate an idea and then realise it in a way that connects with its intended audience. At the University of Lincoln you will develop your image-making skills across both traditional and digital approaches, working in a professional studio environment that encourages creative risk-taking alongside technical discipline. You will explore drawing, painting, printmaking, digital illustration and a range of other approaches, discovering and developing your own creative voice through sustained practice and critical reflection. The programme emphasises craftsmanship, creativity, innovation and imagination, and you will build a body of work that demonstrates the breadth and depth of your capabilities. The course runs over three years full time and includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities, giving you direct professional experience and the kind of portfolio that employers in the sector value. Illustration graduates work across a wide range of industries and contexts. Editorial illustration for print and digital media, children's book publishing, advertising, packaging, branding, game art, concept design for film and television, and motion graphics are among the many areas where illustration skills are sought. Others move into art direction, design and the broader creative industries. The self-directed creative practice and communication skills the degree develops also transfer into education, community arts and arts management. Postgraduate study in illustration, visual communication or fine art is a route for those who wish to develop specialist practice or academic careers.
