BSc Human Biology and Sport & Exercise Science (With Foundation Year)
About this course
Human biology and sport and exercise science together address the biological systems that underpin physical performance, health and the body's responses to training, injury and the conditions of modern life. Human biology examines anatomy, physiology, genetics and the biological mechanisms of disease and health at a fundamental scientific level; sport and exercise science applies similar biological knowledge in the context of physical performance, training adaptation, psychological factors in sport and the role of exercise in preventing and treating illness. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year and incorporates sandwich, year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you extensive practical experience alongside a scientifically grounded academic education. You will study human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and genetics alongside the sport science content of exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control and sport psychology. The foundation year provides the scientific groundwork needed to engage fully with the degree's more advanced biological content, and the practical components, including laboratory work, physiological testing and sport science assessment, run throughout. Liverpool Hope's combined honours structure means you develop depth in both areas while benefiting from the connections between them. A typical tariff of around 120 points is expected for entry. Graduates pursue careers in sport science, health promotion, exercise physiology, personal training, strength and conditioning, research, healthcare and education. The biology component opens additional doors in biomedical research, public health and the NHS, and many graduates go on to postgraduate study in physiotherapy, sport science, human biology or clinical exercise physiology. The breadth of the degree means graduates can move in several professional directions, depending on which strand they find most compelling.
