BA History (with integrated foundation year)
About this course
History is the discipline that places the past under critical scrutiny, asking how human societies have evolved over time, why events unfolded as they did, and what that record can tell us about the present. It develops the capacity to work with complex evidence, to construct well-reasoned arguments, and to appreciate how the world as it is today is the product of choices, conflicts, and circumstances that are never simply inevitable. A programme that includes an integrated foundation year provides a structured and supported entry into this kind of demanding intellectual work. At Aberystwyth University, this full-time, four-year programme with integrated foundation year encourages you to follow your own historical interests within a research-led teaching environment. You will develop the analytical skills of interpretation, analysis, and communication that are vital in everyday life and highly sought after by employers, engaging with a wide range of historical periods, places, and questions according to your developing interests and the expertise of the department's research-active teaching staff. The foundation year provides the preparation and support needed to succeed in degree-level historical study, making the programme accessible to a range of students who may not have had the opportunity to develop a strong humanities background before university. History graduates are among the most versatile of arts graduates. The civil service, journalism, law, education, heritage and archives, publishing, the military, NGOs, broadcasting, and business are all well-trodden paths. The skills history develops, including the ability to read critically, construct a coherent argument from complex material, and communicate with clarity and precision, are valued in virtually any professional context. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in history, archive and information management, law, journalism, teacher training, or public policy.
