About this course
History at Bristol is an expansive and flexible degree, built around the recognition that historians at the undergraduate level should be able to pursue the questions that genuinely interest them, developing the analytical and research skills of the discipline in the service of original inquiry rather than simply covering a set curriculum. The programme is designed to future-proof your career by developing the advanced skills that are transferable well beyond historical study: the ability to evaluate evidence, construct arguments, understand context, and communicate complex ideas with precision and clarity. You will engage with a broad range of historical periods, regions, and themes, developing both breadth and depth as a historian. Bristol's history department has research strengths across British, European, global, and American history, as well as in the history of science, environment, and culture, and the teaching reflects that diversity. A foundation year is available for students who need additional preparation before entering the main degree. Throughout the programme you will develop the skills to conduct and present original historical research, engaging with primary sources, evaluating historiographical debates, and constructing well-evidenced arguments of your own. Bristol history graduates are valued across a wide range of careers. The analytical and communication abilities the degree develops are assets in journalism, law, the civil service, policy, management, heritage, education, and publishing, among many other fields. Bristol's research reputation and its location in a city with strong professional and cultural connections provide excellent foundations for career entry in many sectors. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in history, education, law, or related fields, and some pursue academic careers.
