About this course
History is much more than an account of what happened in the past. It is a discipline that examines how different people have understood, interpreted, and remembered the past, and how the evidence available to us shapes and limits what we can know. Historians develop the ability to analyse primary sources, construct arguments from incomplete evidence, assess the reliability and perspective of accounts, and situate particular events and processes within broader patterns of change and continuity. These are skills that train the mind with exceptional rigour and that transfer with remarkable versatility to careers across the public, private, and third sectors. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, making it one of the most structurally rich history degrees available. You will engage with history across a range of periods, regions, and thematic concerns, developing your capacity for independent research, sustained analytical argument, and clear and precise writing. The sandwich year and placement opportunities allow you to apply your intellectual skills in professional contexts before you graduate, while the year abroad gives you the opportunity to engage with historical traditions and archives in an international setting. The combination of academic depth and professional experience is a significant advantage in a competitive graduate labour market. History graduates are found in an exceptionally wide range of careers. The civil service, law, journalism, publishing, finance, public relations, teaching, the heritage sector, museums, charities, and international organisations all value the analytical and communication skills that history develops. Many employers specifically seek graduates who can research, synthesise, and argue from complex information, and historians are consistently found to be effective in these roles. Teaching history in schools is a common and rewarding path, and academic research is open to those who continue to postgraduate study. The heritage sector, including Historic England, local authority historic environment services, museums, and archives, offers roles that directly apply historical knowledge.
