About this course
History is the discipline that seeks to understand the human past through evidence, argument, and interpretation. It examines how societies have developed and changed, how individuals and groups have experienced and shaped their worlds, and how the events and structures of the past continue to influence the present. The practice of history involves not only learning what happened but developing the skills to evaluate sources, construct well-reasoned arguments, and understand how historical knowledge is produced and contested. At Manchester Metropolitan University, this three-year full-time degree covers an impressive sweep of time and place, from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome through the medieval world, the early modern period, the Americas, Asia, and into the modern era of global conflict and revolution. You will be taught by historians with expertise across diverse approaches, including social, cultural, political, and military history, as well as contemporary heritage practice. The programme encourages original research with real-world impact, and students are actively engaged with both their tutors and the wider community in producing work that goes beyond conventional academic exercises. A sandwich year and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you professional experience alongside your academic development. With a typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points, the programme is accessible to students from a range of backgrounds.
