BA History and Spanish
About this course
History and Spanish is a degree that unites two disciplines whose combination is particularly rich when applied to the Iberian world. Spain and Latin America have histories of extraordinary complexity and global significance: from the Roman Hispania through the Moorish kingdoms and the Reconquista, to the Habsburg empire that reshaped the early modern world, to the political turbulence of the twentieth century including the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, to the democratic transition and Spain's role in contemporary Europe. Spanish gives you direct access to those histories in their own language, and to the literature, politics and culture that accompanied them. At the University of Chester, the four-year full-time programme develops your historical knowledge and your Spanish language proficiency simultaneously. You will explore the history of Britain, Spain and beyond across nearly two millennia, developing the research skills, critical analysis and historical writing that the discipline requires. The Spanish component takes your language skills progressively towards professional fluency, engaging with literature, media and contemporary culture alongside linguistic study. The degree includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience before graduation. Chester itself, with its remarkable Roman and medieval heritage, provides an inspiring setting for historical study. Graduates of history and Spanish combinations work in teaching, the civil service, the diplomatic service, international business, journalism, publishing, heritage and museum work, translation and the voluntary sector. Spanish language skills reliably enhance employability, and the combination of historical training and linguistic fluency is valued in organisations with international interests. Postgraduate study in history, Spanish studies, translation or international relations is a natural continuation.
