History and Spanish form a pairing that works on multiple levels. History brings the analytical depth to understand how the modern world was made, tracing the emergence of states, empires, ideologies, and social structures across centuries and continents. Spanish connects you to one of the world's most widely spoken languages and to a set of cultures, literatures, and histories that span Europe and the Americas. Together, they give you both a way of understanding the past and a linguistic and cultural competence that opens doors across a huge range of professional and academic contexts. At Queen's University Belfast, this four-year full-time degree gives you the opportunity to engage with both disciplines in depth from the outset. In the history strand, you will range widely across time and geography, from the Roman empire and the Middle Ages through to the great modern revolutions and their aftermath, studying across Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. Teaching takes place in small groups, ensuring you develop your historical thinking through close engagement with expert scholars and primary sources. The Spanish strand gives you rigorous language training alongside immersion in the literature, culture, and history of the Spanish-speaking world, developing your ability to communicate fluently and to engage with Hispanic society and thought on its own terms. Queen's emphasises from the start that you will be trusted to make your own choices across these broad fields, developing intellectual independence alongside subject knowledge.
