BA History and Sociology
About this course
History and Sociology together form a pairing that makes sense of both the past and the structures that shape the present. History asks how and why the world came to be as it is, while Sociology examines the social forces, institutions, and inequalities that organise human life. Together they give you a powerful toolkit for understanding change over time and the mechanisms through which societies reproduce or transform themselves. On this four-year programme at the University of the Highlands and Islands, you will move between the close reading of primary evidence, historical argument, and sociological theory. You will explore how class, gender, race, and power have shaped communities across different periods, and you will learn to bring quantitative and qualitative methods to bear on social questions. The combination trains you to think both chronologically and structurally, questioning assumptions about progress, identity, and social order. You will develop strong written and analytical skills as you work with archival sources, sociological data, and a wide range of secondary literature. The University of the Highlands and Islands has a distinctive character, rooted in its dispersed, community-connected campuses across the north and islands of Scotland, and the curriculum often reflects the social and historical experience of those regions alongside broader national and international themes. Graduates who combine history with sociology are well placed for careers in public policy, community development, education, journalism, the heritage sector, social research, and third-sector organisations. The analytical and communicative skills you develop are valued across a wide range of professional settings, and the degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in history, sociology, social policy, or related fields.
