BA History and Politics of the Americas with a Year Abroad
About this course
The history and politics of the Americas is a focused and intellectually rich programme that examines the Western Hemisphere as a distinctive political and historical space, encompassing the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The Americas have been shaped by indigenous civilisations, European colonisation, the Atlantic slave trade, revolutionary independence movements, Cold War conflict, and the complex relationships between the world's most powerful economy and its southern neighbours. Studying the history and politics of this region together develops a nuanced understanding of how the past and the present are intertwined in a part of the world that continues to be central to global affairs. At University College London you will study this four-year full-time programme, which includes a year abroad built into the degree. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study at a university in the Americas, immersing yourself in the academic culture and, where language allows, the social and political life of the region you are studying. UCL's Institute of the Americas provides a dedicated research environment for the study of the region, and the programme draws on expertise across history, political science, and area studies. Across the four years you will study American political history, Latin American history, contemporary politics in the United States and Latin America, political theory, and research methods. The typical entry tariff is 168 points. Graduates from this programme work in diplomacy and foreign affairs, international organisations, journalism and media, international development, policy research, think tanks, and academic research. UCL's reputation and its connections to major policy, media, and research organisations are a significant advantage. Further study in American studies, Latin American studies, political science, or international relations is a natural route for graduates seeking to specialise or pursue research and academic careers.
