BA History and Philosophy
About this course
History and Philosophy are disciplines that have been in conversation since the ancient world: philosophy asks timeless questions about knowledge, morality, existence, and reason, while history examines how ideas, institutions, and people have changed across time. Studying them together allows you to bring historical perspective to philosophical questions and philosophical rigour to historical problems, which makes you more alert to contingency when you engage with abstract theory and more conceptually precise when you engage with historical evidence. At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic culture and to encounter philosophical and historical traditions beyond the British and Scottish contexts in which you begin. You will study both disciplines across a range of periods and themes, developing the ability to read complex texts closely, construct and evaluate arguments, handle primary and secondary sources critically, and write clearly about difficult material. The year abroad deepens your intellectual independence and broadens your sense of what academic study in the humanities can look like across different traditions. Stirling's campus environment and the combination of well-established departments in both history and philosophy provide a supportive and stimulating context for this interdisciplinary study. The degree challenges you to move between the abstract and the particular, between systematic argument and historical narrative, which is an unusual and genuinely valuable intellectual formation. Graduates move into careers in teaching, the civil service, journalism, publishing, law, policy research, the charitable sector, and any professional context where clear thinking and careful writing are assets. Many pursue postgraduate study in philosophy, history, law, or related disciplines. The combination of analytical depth and historical breadth that this degree develops is valued across many sectors and organisations.
