About this course

History and education is a combination that explores both the past itself and the ways in which knowledge about the past is transmitted, contested, and used in educational contexts. History provides the analytical frameworks for understanding how societies change over time, how events are interpreted, and whose experiences are captured in the historical record. Education as a discipline examines how learning happens, how institutions are organised, and how the relationship between knowledge, power, and pedagogy shapes what is taught and why. Together, they prepare graduates both to understand the world and to contribute to the way it is explained and taught. At Keele, this three-year full-time BA explores how the past continues to shape the present, applying historical insights to urgent questions in contemporary education. You will combine academic study in both subjects with hands-on experience in diverse learning environments, including classrooms and community settings. The programme includes field trips, guest speakers, school placements, and experiential learning that build your practical portfolio and develop the skills needed for careers in education and public-facing roles. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement are also included, giving you a rich breadth of professional and international experience. With a typical entry tariff of 104 UCAS points, the programme is accessible to students with strong academic commitment. Graduates from history and education programmes are well placed for careers in teaching and educational support, heritage education, museum learning, community history and archive work, publishing, journalism, arts and cultural institutions, and policy roles relating to education or the humanities. The practical experience gained during placements is directly relevant to teaching careers, and many graduates go on to postgraduate initial teacher training in history or a related subject. Postgraduate study in education, history, cultural studies, or heritage management is a further option.
