BA Hebrew and Russian
About this course
Hebrew and Russian is an exceptional language combination, spanning the Semitic and the Slavic language families and giving access to two of the most historically significant cultural and intellectual traditions in the world. Hebrew connects you to one of the oldest literary and religious traditions in human history, to the modern state of Israel and its extraordinarily dynamic contemporary culture and society, and to the living language of a people whose contributions to philosophy, science, literature, and religion have shaped civilisation globally. Russian opens the door to one of the world's great literary traditions, including Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and their successors, and to the geopolitical story of a country that has shaped world history from the Soviet period to the present. University College London is one of very few institutions in the UK where this combination can be studied at degree level, and the programme draws on the expertise of UCL's Hebrew and Jewish Studies department alongside the Slavonic and East European Studies provision. The four-year full-time programme develops proficiency in both languages to an advanced level, working through grammar, reading, spoken communication, and translation while engaging with the history, literature, and culture of both language communities. You will read texts in the original in each language, situating them within their historical and cultural contexts, and you will develop the comparative linguistic insight that comes from working across two quite different linguistic systems and scripts. A typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the academic demands of this specialist programme. Graduates with Hebrew and Russian are valued in diplomacy, international security, journalism, translation and interpreting, academic research in Middle Eastern or Slavonic studies, cultural organisations, and intelligence-adjacent roles. The combination's rarity is a professional asset wherever both language communities are relevant.
