BSc Health Foundation Pathway leading to a Degree
About this course
A health foundation pathway programme is designed to open the door to degree-level study in health-related disciplines for students who do not yet have the qualifications required for direct entry, or who would benefit from a period of academic preparation before beginning a demanding professional programme. It provides the scientific, analytical, and study skills foundations needed to succeed in health and allied health degrees, bridging the gap between the student's current level and the requirements of degree-level work in a supportive and structured environment. At the University of Huddersfield, this four-year programme begins with a foundation year that provides the scientific and academic preparation needed before the degree proper begins. Huddersfield has a broad range of health and healthcare-related degree programmes, and the foundation pathway is designed to prepare students for entry into these programmes after the foundation year is completed successfully. Through the foundation year you will develop core knowledge in biological sciences, study skills, academic writing, and the contextual understanding of health and the health professions that prepares you for more specialist degree-level study. The extended length of the programme gives you time to build confidence and competence before engaging with the full demands of a professional or health science degree. Graduates of health foundation pathway programmes go on to careers in the full range of health and allied health professions depending on the degree they progress to: nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, biomedical science, paramedic practice, and health management are all possible destinations. The foundation year increases access to these pathways for students from a wider range of backgrounds, and the opportunity to demonstrate academic capability during the foundation year is valued by students who may not have had the chance to do so through traditional routes. Career progression in health and healthcare is structured and rewarding, with clear pathways from graduate entry to specialisation and leadership.
