About this course

Health and social care sits at the point where policy, practice and people's lives intersect. It is a field concerned with understanding how health and wellbeing are shaped by social, economic and environmental factors, how care services are organised and delivered, what good practice looks like in supporting individuals and communities, and how the systems that provide care can be improved. It draws on sociology, psychology, public health, ethics and policy analysis, and it prepares graduates for roles in one of the largest and most vital sectors of the economy. At Swansea University, this three-year full-time BSc (Hons) offers a broad and flexible curriculum that examines health and social care from multiple angles. You will study the social determinants of health, the organisation of health and care services in the UK and internationally, approaches to safeguarding, the ethics of care, and the ways in which factors including deprivation, disability, mental health and age shape people's experiences of services. The programme is designed with employability in mind, equipping you with the analytical and practical skills that employers in health, social care and public services value, and supporting you to develop the professional identity and reflective practice that a career in this sector requires. Typical entry is around 104 UCAS tariff points. Graduates from Health and Social Care degrees go on to a wide range of careers. Many work in NHS settings in non-clinical roles, including commissioning, public health, health promotion, patient services and management. Others move into social care, children's services, housing, voluntary organisations, third sector advocacy and local government. The degree can also serve as a route into further professional training, including social work qualifying programmes, nursing, occupational therapy and public health masters degrees. The analytical and interpersonal skills developed make graduates well suited to any organisation concerned with the wellbeing of people and communities.
