MA Greek/ Theology & Religious Studies
About this course
Ancient Greek combined with theology and religious studies is a pairing of particular depth and coherence. Ancient Greek is one of the great languages of human intellectual history, the vehicle for Homer's epics, the tragedians, Plato's dialogues, Aristotle's works, and the text of the New Testament, among much else. Theology and religious studies encompasses the serious scholarly examination of religion in its many forms, from biblical scholarship and the history of Christian thought to comparative religion, philosophy of religion, and the relationship between religious belief and politics, culture, and ethics. The two subjects reinforce each other profoundly: reading theological and religious texts in their original language opens a level of engagement with their meaning that translation alone cannot provide. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time combined degree allows you to study both subjects alongside other commitments. Glasgow has particular strengths in classics and in theology and religious studies, with specialists across the full range of ancient Greek literature, biblical studies, and the history and philosophy of religion. You will develop your Greek language skills progressively while engaging with the full range of theological and religious inquiry, examining the Bible, Christian theology, world religions, and the relationship of religious thought to other domains of human life. A year abroad is available as part of the programme. Graduates of Greek and theology and religious studies pursue careers in ministry, education, publishing, heritage, journalism, the civil service, and academic research. The combination is particularly well suited to those drawn to theological or biblical scholarship at the highest level, for which postgraduate study is typically required. The interpretive, analytical, and communication skills the degree develops are also valued across a wide range of professional contexts where the ability to engage with complex texts and ideas carefully and rigorously is a genuine asset.
