BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the discipline of visual communication, using typography, image, colour, layout, and form to solve communication problems and create meaningful experiences for audiences. It is a field that rewards both creative thinking and technical precision, combining conceptual development with the craft of realising ideas across print, digital, environmental, and interactive media. Professional graphic designers work across branding and identity, editorial design, packaging, web and app design, advertising, and motion graphics, adapting their skills to the formats and audiences that each project demands. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this programme is offered on a part-time basis, giving students the flexibility to study in a studio environment with professional-standard facilities while managing other commitments. The studio environment is central to how design is learned, and the focus throughout is on the real-world skills that professional practice requires. You will work across projects that develop your visual thinking, your technical command of design tools, and your ability to communicate ideas clearly to clients and collaborators. Part-time study in a practice-based discipline allows you to develop your portfolio incrementally, applying what you learn to real work as you go. Graduates from graphic design programmes at UWE work in design studios, advertising agencies, publishing houses, in-house creative teams, and as independent freelance designers. The visual communication skills you develop are valued across many industries, and the Bristol creative economy provides a strong local context for graduate employment. Many graduates build portfolio careers combining employed and freelance work, while others move into senior design, art direction, or creative direction roles over time. Postgraduate study in graphic design, visual communication, or design research is an option for those who want to develop their practice further or pursue academic careers.
