BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the art and craft of visual communication, shaping how ideas, information, and identities reach their audiences through typography, image, colour, and layout across print, screen, and other surfaces. It is a discipline that rewards both rigorous thinking and imaginative invention, demanding that designers understand not just how to make things look compelling but what they are trying to communicate and why. At the University of Suffolk, this part-time programme is taught alongside Graphic Illustration, and the two pathways are deliberately connected. This means that early in your studies you are not locked into a single direction: if you develop a passion for illustration, you can transfer to the Graphic Illustration pathway to follow that interest more deeply, or you can develop your own practice at the intersection of the two. You will develop skills in typography, branding, layout, image-making, and digital design, working with professional tools and building a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative thinking and technical range. The proximity of the two programmes creates a rich studio culture in which graphic designers and illustrators work alongside each other, which reflects professional reality in many studios and agencies. Graduates from graphic design programmes go on to careers as graphic designers, brand designers, digital designers, art directors, typographers, and illustrators, working in studios, agencies, in-house design teams, and as freelancers. The skills in visual thinking and communication that the degree develops are also valued in advertising, publishing, user experience design, and broader creative industries. Further study at postgraduate level in graphic design, visual communication, or illustration is available for those who wish to develop their expertise or move into academic or research practice.
