BDes Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the practice of creating visual communication, combining typography, image, colour and composition to convey ideas and information with clarity and impact. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of art, technology and commerce, and it is present in virtually every aspect of the visual environment, from the brands, packaging and advertising that shape consumer experience to the interfaces, publications and wayfinding systems that help people navigate the world. Graphic designers are among the most broadly employed of all creative graduates, working across advertising agencies, design consultancies, in-house brand teams, digital product companies and the cultural sector. At the University of Dundee this programme includes a foundation year and a year abroad, making the full course four years full time. You will work on a range of design projects set by tutors, external design agencies and international design bodies, developing the habit of exploring, experimenting and innovating that distinguishes the strongest designers from mere technical executors. Dundee's design school has a strong reputation for developing independent creative thinkers, and the studio culture emphasises rigorous critique and iterative development of ideas alongside technical skill. You will develop competence in typography, visual identity, editorial design, screen-based and digital design, and the ability to develop design concepts from initial idea to finished execution. You will also build the critical vocabulary and historical understanding of graphic design that allow you to situate your practice within the broader tradition and to engage with the field as a reflective practitioner. Graduates from graphic design programmes at Dundee work as graphic designers, brand designers, typographers, art directors, UX designers, motion designers and visual communicators across a wide range of clients and industries. Postgraduate study in graphic design, design leadership or a related creative field is also an option for those seeking further development or specialisation.
