BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the practice of visual communication, using image, typography, colour, and layout to convey information, create identity, and shape the way people experience and interact with the world around them. From logos and branding systems to book covers, packaging, websites, and wayfinding, graphic design is present in virtually every context where information needs to be communicated effectively. At its best, it combines aesthetic intelligence with strategic clarity, producing work that is both visually compelling and functionally purposeful. At the University of Cumbria, this full-time, three-year programme is a highly practical, career-focused degree that provides extensive hands-on experience from the outset. You will develop expertise in typography, illustration, photography, and the craft of combining these elements into coherent visual communication, working with industry-standard tools and following professional workflows. The programme is taught by specialists in graphic design, magazine design, illustration, and typography, giving you access to expert knowledge across the different specialisms that make up the discipline. The focus on career preparation means you develop not just creative skills but the professional competence, confidence, and portfolio that employers and clients look for. The typical entry tariff is 88 UCAS points. Graphic design graduates work in branding and identity, publishing, advertising agencies, web and app design, packaging, editorial design, and in-house design departments across virtually every sector. Roles include graphic designer, art director, brand designer, UX designer, and visual communications specialist. The skills developed during the degree, including visual thinking, project management, and client communication, are also valued in roles in marketing, communications, and media. Many graduates build freelance practices alongside studio employment. Postgraduate study in graphic design, communication design, or related visual disciplines is available for those who wish to specialise further.
