BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design shapes the visual language through which ideas, information, products and organisations communicate. From brand identities and publication design to digital interfaces, environmental graphics and motion design, graphic designers make decisions about typography, colour, image and layout that determine whether a message is received clearly and memorably or lost in the noise. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time degree blends traditional graphic arts practice with emerging trends in the creative industries, teaching in a studio environment that reflects professional working conditions. A sandwich year, year abroad and work placement give the programme a practical and international dimension that connects your academic education to the realities of creative professional life. You will develop skills in typography, image-making, visual thinking, digital design tools and the conceptual process of moving from a brief to a resolved visual solution. The programme's emphasis on problem-based, in-studio learning means you work on briefs and projects throughout, building a portfolio of work rather than simply acquiring theoretical knowledge. You will learn to analyse communication problems, develop multiple creative directions and evaluate your work critically against professional and cultural standards. Liverpool's creative scene and the city's distinctive visual culture provide a rich context for this kind of study. A typical entry tariff of around 152 points is expected. Graduates work as graphic designers, art directors, brand designers, typographers, digital designers, UX/UI designers and creative directors across design studios, advertising agencies, publishing companies, technology firms, cultural institutions and in-house creative teams. The portfolio you develop during the degree is central to your employability, and the placement experience gives you professional credibility alongside it. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study in design, visual communication or a related creative specialism.
