BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the practice of visual communication, the discipline through which ideas, messages and identities are given form through typography, image, colour and layout. It sits at the meeting point of art and commerce, concerned not just with how things look but with how visual choices communicate meaning, guide attention and shape behaviour. From brand identity and packaging to digital interfaces, editorial design and social media content, graphic design is embedded in almost every aspect of contemporary visual culture. At Leeds Beckett University you will study for three years full-time, developing your creative approach through a combination of industry projects, course briefs and self-initiated work. You will build technical skills in design tools and production processes alongside the conceptual and critical thinking that distinguishes a thoughtful designer from a technically proficient one. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, giving you an international perspective on visual culture and design practice, and the opportunity to work within a different creative context that will broaden your visual references and ways of working. Graduate graphic designers work across an enormous range of contexts, including advertising, brand agencies, publishing, in-house design teams, digital product design, illustration, motion graphics, packaging and retail environments. Many graduates move into freelance practice, building a portfolio career across multiple clients and sectors. Others specialise in areas such as typographic design, user interface design, design for print or social media content creation. Postgraduate study in graphic design, visual communication, design research or creative direction is a natural progression for graduates who want to develop a more specialist or research-focused practice. The transferable skills of visual thinking, creative problem-solving and communication are valued across the broader creative and cultural sectors.
