BA Global Philosophies & Worldviews and Sport & Physical Education
About this course
Global philosophies and worldviews is a discipline that takes seriously the diversity of human thinking about fundamental questions. Rather than limiting philosophical inquiry to the Western tradition, it brings African philosophy, Chinese ethics, Hindu thought, Islamic political philosophy, Jewish existentialism, and Buddhist mysticism into conversation with the questions that have preoccupied thinkers across history: what is real, how should we live, what can we know, and what connects or divides human communities. Combined with sport and physical education, the degree pairs this reflective, cross-cultural philosophical inquiry with the study of movement, sport, physical development, and the pedagogical skills needed to support others in becoming physically active. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside the core academic content. The placement year and work placements in sport and physical education contexts help you develop the practical teaching and coaching skills that complement your philosophical studies. The year abroad adds an international perspective that is directly relevant to a degree exploring ideas across cultures and societies. You will develop skills in philosophical analysis, cross-cultural engagement, and reflective thinking, alongside practical competence in sport pedagogy, curriculum design, and working with diverse groups in physical activity settings. The combination asks you to bring intellectual depth to the physical domain and physical engagement to philosophical questions. Graduates from this combination pursue careers in teaching, sports coaching, youth work, community physical activity, philosophy and ethics education, international development, and a range of other fields. The combination of philosophical breadth, practical sports expertise, and intercultural awareness is distinctive. Postgraduate study in education, philosophy, sports science, or theology is a natural continuation for those who wish to go deeper.
