About this course

German with Film Studies brings together one of Europe's most important languages with one of the most intellectually distinctive disciplines in the humanities. German is the language of a major economic and cultural power, of Goethe, Kafka, and Mann, of Weimar cinema and the Berliner Ensemble, and of philosophical traditions that have shaped Western thought from Kant to Heidegger. Film studies examines cinema as an art form, an industry, and a cultural practice, developing skills in textual analysis, film history, genre theory, and the critical frameworks through which we understand moving image media. Together, they give you access to one of the richest film cultures in the world, from the German Expressionist classics and the New German Cinema of the 1970s to contemporary German-language film. At the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time programme develops genuine linguistic proficiency in German alongside a rigorous engagement with the theory and history of film. Warwick has strong reputations in both German studies and film, and students benefit from teaching by scholars who are active in research across both areas. The degree includes a sandwich year and a work placement, providing professional experience alongside your academic study. You will engage with German language and literature at an advanced level, study film history and theory across world cinema, and develop the close analytical and critical writing skills that both disciplines demand. Graduates from this programme go on to careers in film criticism, journalism, broadcasting, translation, cultural institutions, education, the civil service, and a range of roles in the arts and media. German language skills combined with film and cultural knowledge are particularly valued in roles involving Germany, Austria, or the German-speaking world, as well as in creative and media industries more broadly. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in German studies, film studies, or media, while others move into professional roles drawing on their combined linguistic and analytical capabilities.
