MA German Italian Persian
About this course
Studying three languages at degree level is an intellectually demanding and professionally rewarding undertaking. German, Italian, and Persian span a remarkable range of cultural and historical worlds: German opens up the literature, philosophy, and history of Central Europe alongside the political and economic significance of the German-speaking world; Italian connects you to the culture that produced the Renaissance, one of the richest musical and operatic traditions in existence, and a language spoken across a major European nation; Persian provides access to one of the oldest literary traditions in the world, a language with deep roots in classical poetry, philosophy, and scholarship, and significance across Iran, Afghanistan, and beyond. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops all three languages to a high level of proficiency, combining language acquisition with the study of literature, film, history, and cultural thought in each tradition. You will develop analytical and interpretive skills across all three languages, engaging with primary texts and cultural materials that require both linguistic precision and intellectual engagement. A year abroad is a central part of the degree, giving you the opportunity for immersive study in one or more of your language communities, accelerating your fluency and deepening your understanding of living cultural contexts. Triple language graduates are exceptionally well placed for careers in diplomacy, international organisations, translation, interpreting, journalism, international law, finance, and any professional environment where linguistic range and cultural intelligence are assets. Teaching, both in the UK and abroad, is also a strong pathway. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in translation studies, area studies, or linguistics, extending their expertise. The rarity of Persian as a degree subject, combined with two major European languages, makes this combination particularly distinctive and sought after in competitive professional environments.
