MA German and Philosophy (4yrs)
About this course
German and philosophy is a pairing that connects deep linguistic and cultural engagement with one of the great language traditions of European thought to the formal discipline of philosophy, which has itself been so profoundly shaped by German thinkers from Kant and Hegel through to Nietzsche, Heidegger, Wittgenstein and Habermas. German at degree level encompasses film, visual culture, gender studies, literature and history, giving you access to one of the richest cultural traditions in Europe across multiple media and periods. Philosophy addresses fundamental questions about knowledge, truth, morality, reality and the quality of argument, developing rigorous analytical and critical skills that complement and deepen your engagement with German intellectual culture. At the University of Aberdeen you will study German and philosophy over four years of full-time study, with a year abroad built into the programme that provides immersive experience of the German-speaking world, whether in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. You will develop genuine proficiency in the German language alongside literary, cultural and historical study, and engage with philosophical questions in ways that are enriched by your engagement with German-language philosophy and intellectual tradition. The typical tariff of 184 reflects the combined academic and linguistic demands of a dual-discipline programme at a research-intensive Scottish university. Graduates work in translation and interpreting, journalism, the civil service, international relations, education, publishing, cultural organisations, European institutions, philosophy teaching and a range of roles where strong analytical thinking and German language proficiency are valued. The combination is particularly distinctive for graduates seeking careers in European public policy, cultural diplomacy, academic philosophy or German studies. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in philosophy, German, comparative literature, translation or European studies, and the rigorous analytical formation developed through both disciplines is a strong foundation for research-level academic work or demanding professional roles.
