MA German and Italian and Russian
About this course
Studying German, Italian, and Russian together at degree level is an intellectually ambitious choice that rewards you with access to three of the most important European literary and cultural traditions. German opens the world of Central European literature, philosophy, and intellectual history alongside one of the continent's most significant economic and political powers. Italian connects you to the culture that produced the Renaissance, a musical tradition of unparalleled richness, and a modern nation with distinctive artistic and political dimensions. Russian unlocks one of the great literary traditions in world literature alongside the historical and geopolitical significance of the world's largest country. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops all three languages to a high level of proficiency, combining structured language learning with the study of literature, film, history, and culture in each tradition. You will develop analytical and interpretive skills across all three languages, engaging with primary texts and cultural materials that require both precision and intellectual engagement. A year abroad is built into the degree, giving you the opportunity to spend extended time in an immersive environment that deepens your fluency and your understanding of living cultural contexts in one or more of your languages. Triple language graduates bring an exceptional combination of linguistic range and cultural intelligence to careers in diplomacy, international organisations, translation, interpreting, journalism, finance, legal services, and any professional environment where the ability to move between European cultures and languages is valued. Teaching in the UK and abroad is also a strong pathway. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in translation, comparative literature, linguistics, or area studies, extending their expertise. The particular combination of German, Italian, and Russian is distinctive in a competitive job market and opens doors that no single-language degree could.
