MSci Geophysics with a Year Abroad
About this course
Geophysics applies the principles of physics to the study of the Earth, from the deep structure of its core and mantle to the dynamics of its crust, oceans and atmosphere. It encompasses seismology, the study of how sound waves travel through the Earth and what they reveal about its interior; gravity and magnetic surveys that map subsurface structures; the physics of Earth's magnetic field and its reversals; and the remote sensing of oceans, ice and climate. Geophysics is therefore both a discipline of pure scientific inquiry and the technical foundation for the exploration of natural resources and the monitoring of natural hazards. At Imperial College you will study this four-year full-time programme, joining a research environment of international standing in the earth and planetary sciences. You will develop a rigorous grounding in the physics and mathematics that underpin geophysics, alongside expertise in specific geophysical methods and their application to understanding the Earth. The programme provides a thorough understanding of how our planet works, from internal core processes to the interactions between the solid Earth, the oceans, the atmosphere, and the solar system. The four-year structure allows you to engage with the discipline at significant depth, developing advanced analytical and computational skills that are valued in both academic research and industry. Geophysics graduates are in demand in the natural resources sector, particularly in hydrocarbon and mineral exploration, where seismic and potential field methods are central tools. Environmental consultancy, civil engineering site investigation, and geohazard assessment also employ geophysicists. The strong mathematical and computational skills developed through the degree are valued in data science, finance, and technology companies, broadening your career options beyond the earth sciences. Many graduates continue to postgraduate research, pursuing PhDs in geophysics, seismology, climate science, planetary science, or related fields.
