BSc Geophysics
About this course
Geophysics applies the methods of physics and mathematics to the study of the Earth, exploring the processes and structures that operate within our planet and at its surface. From the movement of tectonic plates and the generation of earthquakes to the flow of the Earth's magnetic field and the distribution of oil and mineral reserves beneath the surface, geophysics addresses questions of enormous scientific and practical importance. The discipline merges rigorous physical and mathematical reasoning with the complexity of real geological systems, producing a kind of understanding that neither geology nor physics alone can achieve. At Durham University, this programme gives you a thorough grounding in the physical and mathematical tools of geophysics alongside the earth science context needed to apply them meaningfully. You will study seismology, gravity, electromagnetism, heat flow and remote sensing, developing the skills to acquire, process and interpret geophysical data. A sandwich placement year gives you the opportunity to work in a professional geophysical environment, gaining experience that is particularly valuable given the applied nature of the field. A year abroad is also available, and the programme includes work placement opportunities, connecting your academic study to the real challenges facing the energy, environmental and natural resources sectors. Geophysicists work in the oil and gas industry, in environmental consulting, in mining and mineral exploration, in seismic hazard assessment and in academic and government research. Graduates are also valued in data-intensive roles more broadly, given the strong quantitative and computational skills the degree develops. Postgraduate study in geophysics, earth sciences, data science or environmental science is a common route for those who want to specialise further or pursue a research career. The intersection of climate science and Earth system modelling is an increasingly important area for geophysically trained graduates.
