MSci Geophysics
About this course
Geophysics is the science of the Earth's physical properties and processes, using the methods of physics to investigate the structure, dynamics, and composition of the planet from its surface down to its core. It encompasses the study of seismic waves, gravity, magnetism, electrical conductivity, and heat flow, and applies these to questions ranging from understanding plate tectonics and volcanic systems to locating oil and gas reserves, mapping groundwater, and assessing earthquake and tsunami hazards. At the University of East Anglia, this four-year full-time programme develops your understanding of physics and mathematics before applying those foundations to the specific problems of Earth science. You will study seismology, potential field methods, rock physics, environmental geophysics, and the computational techniques that are essential for processing and interpreting large geophysical datasets. UEA has strong research activity in Earth and environmental sciences, and the programme benefits from that research environment. You will develop both theoretical understanding and practical data analysis skills, including fieldwork experience that brings techniques to life in real geological settings. Geophysics graduates are in demand across the energy sector, particularly in oil and gas exploration, geothermal energy, and the mineral resources industry. Environmental consultancy, hydrogeological survey, and civil engineering site investigation are other major employment areas. Government agencies, research institutes, and universities also employ geophysicists in monitoring, research, and hazard assessment roles. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study at master's or PhD level, specialising in areas such as seismology, exploration geophysics, climate modelling, or natural hazard science.
