About this course

Geography is one of the most integrative of the sciences, connecting the physical processes that shape the planet with the human systems that organise societies across it. Physical geography examines landforms, climates, ecosystems and environmental processes. Human geography explores how people, communities and institutions use, transform and relate to the spaces and environments they inhabit. What makes geography distinctive is the insistence on understanding the connections between these two dimensions, which makes it especially relevant to the most pressing challenges of the present moment, including climate change, urbanisation, resource management and social inequality. This four-year programme at Edge Hill includes a STEM foundation year, which is designed to develop the scientific and quantitative skills needed for degree-level work in geography and related disciplines. It is an entry route that is particularly suited to students who want additional academic preparation before engaging with the main degree, whether because they have not covered the relevant subject areas or because they are returning to education after a period away. The foundation year gives you a thorough grounding in scientific thinking, mathematics and study skills before you progress into the main geography programme. Across the degree you will develop competence in both the physical and human aspects of geography, building skills in fieldwork, data analysis, GIS and research methods alongside your subject knowledge. Geography graduates are among the most versatile of any discipline, moving into environmental consultancy, urban and spatial planning, GIS and data analysis, international development, the civil service, education, research, conservation and the private sector. The breadth of analytical, quantitative and fieldwork skills the degree develops is genuinely useful across a very wide range of careers.
