BSc Geography (with a year in industry)
About this course
Geography is the study of the Earth's surfaces, environments, and the human activities that shape and are shaped by them. It is uniquely bridging, encompassing the physical processes of landform, climate, and ecological systems alongside the social, economic, and political forces that drive urbanisation, migration, inequality, and environmental change. Geographers are comfortable moving between quantitative data and qualitative field evidence, between the local and the global, and between scientific analysis and humanistic interpretation. The University of the Highlands and Islands offers this five-year full-time geography programme with a year in industry, giving you sustained professional experience in an applied geography, environmental, or related professional context within the degree. This extended engagement with professional practice is distinctive and valuable, developing the skills, networks, and contextual understanding that support effective employment after graduation. The university's location in the Highlands and Islands provides an exceptional environment for geography, placing you within one of Europe's most dramatic and ecologically significant landscapes, with access to coastal, upland, island, and boreal environments that are of major significance for environmental science and conservation. You will study physical geography, human geography, GIS and remote sensing, environmental management, research methods, and fieldwork, developing a rigorous foundation in both branches of the discipline. Geography graduates are valued across environmental consultancy, planning, GIS and spatial analysis, environmental management, conservation, public sector administration, international development, education, and research. The combination of scientific and social analytical skills the degree develops, along with the practical professional experience from the year in industry, supports strong graduate employment. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, or related disciplines.
