BA Geography
About this course
Geography is an unusually broad discipline, spanning the physical processes that shape landscapes and ecosystems and the human geographies of society, economy, and culture. It is a subject that develops both scientific and social scientific skills, training you to conduct fieldwork, analyse spatial data, think about scale and context, and engage with the real-world challenges that arise at the intersection of people and places. At its best, geography equips you to understand the complexity of the world and to contribute to the decisions that shape how it changes. At the University of Brighton, this three-year full-time degree provides abundant opportunities for hands-on learning through laboratory work, field trips in the UK and overseas, live environmental research projects, and placements with local councils, conservation charities, and environmental organisations. The combination of academic rigour and applied learning is central to the programme's identity, and the supportive community at Brighton is designed to help students from all backgrounds develop their potential. A sandwich year and work placement opportunities are built in. The typical entry tariff is 104 points. Geography graduates develop a versatile set of skills, including spatial analysis, fieldwork competence, data literacy, environmental understanding, and critical social science thinking, that are valued across planning, environmental management, conservation, local government, international development, GIS, and research. The degree's strong practical and applied dimension means graduates often enter the workforce with directly relevant professional experience. Postgraduate study in geography, environmental science, planning, or development studies is a natural continuation.
