About this course

Geography is a discipline of exceptional breadth, spanning the physical processes that shape the earth's surface and the human geographies of economy, culture, politics and society that are distributed across it. What unites the two halves of the discipline is a concern with place, space and scale: how location matters, how environments and communities are interconnected, and how global processes play out differently in different places. At degree level, geography trains you in a wide range of research methods, from quantitative data analysis and mapping to ethnography and archival research, making graduates among the most methodologically versatile of any social and natural science. At the London School of Economics and Political Science you will study geography within one of the world's leading social science universities, giving your education a strong emphasis on the social, political and economic dimensions of the discipline. You will develop skills in analysing and evaluating geographical information and in completing fieldwork, including the opportunity to take part in a field trip in your second year. The programme also includes the option to study a language specialism, which can be added to your degree award and extends your international scope further. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, placing your geographical education in a broader international context. LSE geography graduates go on to careers in urban planning and development, environmental consulting, international development and policy, finance and investment analysis, journalism and media, the civil service, research, and a wide range of roles in global organisations and businesses where spatial and socioeconomic thinking is valued. The research skills and analytical confidence the programme develops are highly portable. Postgraduate study in geography, urban planning, environmental science, development studies, public policy, or economics is a well-established path, and the LSE environment offers strong connections to research and policy institutions across the world.
