MA Geography and Management
About this course
Geography and management is a pairing that bridges the natural and social sciences with the world of organisations and strategy. Geography examines how physical and human systems interact across space and time, how environments are shaped by natural processes and human activity, and how the spatial distribution of resources, populations and economic activity creates the patterns we observe in cities, regions and global supply chains. Management provides the analytical and strategic tools to understand how organisations function, how decisions are made and how businesses and public institutions navigate complex and changing environments. Together, they equip you to think about the world both spatially and organisationally, which is a genuinely distinctive combination. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme challenges those who wish to think critically and creatively about the world around them and understand the interaction of environmental systems and human activity. You will develop skills in geographical analysis alongside management knowledge in strategy, finance, operations and organisational behaviour, building the ability to bring spatial thinking and environmental understanding to bear on organisational problems. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in a different country, extending your geographical and management perspective through exposure to different national environments, economic systems and academic traditions. A typical entry tariff of 232 points reflects the level of academic preparation and analytical aptitude the programme demands. Graduates pursue careers in business strategy, consultancy, environmental management, urban and regional planning, sustainability, supply chain management, international development and the civil service. The combination of geographical and management training is particularly valuable in organisations that operate across multiple locations, that face spatial or environmental challenges, or that need to understand how place shapes commercial and social outcomes. Postgraduate study in geography, management, urban planning or environmental strategy offers further pathways for those who wish to specialise or pursue research.
