MA Geography and German
About this course
Geography and German is a combination that reflects the increasingly international character of the questions that geography addresses. Climate change, migration, economic inequality and environmental degradation are not contained by national borders, and understanding them requires both the analytical tools of geography and the linguistic and cultural knowledge needed to engage with different national and regional perspectives. German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe and the language of one of the world's leading economies, with deep intellectual traditions in geography, environmental science and urban planning. At the University of Aberdeen, the five-year full-time degree develops your German language skills to a high level alongside a rigorous grounding in human and physical geography. You will study topics ranging from geomorphology and climate science to urban geography, development studies, political geography and environmental management, while also building your command of written and spoken German through language modules and engagement with German-language texts and media. Aberdeen's strong research culture in both geography and languages enriches the undergraduate experience, and the five-year degree gives you time to develop genuine depth in both disciplines. Aberdeen's location in north-east Scotland gives the degree a distinctive geographical context. You will be studying close to some of the most dynamic physical landscapes in the UK, from the Cairngorms to the North Sea coast, as well as a city shaped by its relationship with the energy industry. Graduates of geography and German combinations work in environmental consultancy, international development, urban planning, the civil service, international business, journalism, the diplomatic service, education and research. Language skills reliably enhance employment prospects, and the combination of geographical analysis with German proficiency is a compelling one for employers with international interests. Postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, German studies or European affairs is a natural continuation.
