BSc Geography and Environmental Science
About this course
Geography and environmental science together examine the physical and human dimensions of the world we live in, from the processes that shape landscapes and climate to the ways in which societies use, damage, and attempt to protect natural systems. Geography is uniquely placed to connect the sciences with the social sciences and humanities, asking both how the world works and how people understand and relate to their environments. Environmental science brings the rigour of natural science to questions of pollution, ecosystem function, climate change, and sustainability. Together they provide a powerful toolkit for understanding some of the most urgent challenges of the present century. The Open University offers this programme on a part-time basis with distance learning, making it accessible to students who need to study flexibly around employment, caring responsibilities, or other commitments. You will engage with physical geography topics including geomorphology, hydrology, and climatology alongside environmental science content on ecology, pollution, and environmental management. The Open University's distinctive approach to supported distance learning provides high-quality materials, online study, and tutor support, enabling serious and sustained academic work without the need to attend campus. This flexibility makes the programme particularly well suited to those returning to education, those already working in environment-related roles, or those whose circumstances make conventional full-time study impractical. Graduates from geography and environmental science programmes work in environmental consultancy, conservation, local government planning, natural resource management, teaching, research, and the public sector. The combination of scientific understanding and geographical analysis is valued across a range of organisations concerned with land, water, climate, and sustainability. Further study at postgraduate level in environmental management, conservation, geography, or related fields is also a well-trodden path, as is continuing professional development for those already working in environmental practice.
