MEng General Engineering
About this course
General engineering is a deliberately broad approach to engineering education, one that resists early specialisation in favour of developing a deep understanding of engineering as an integrated whole. Most of the great engineering challenges of our time, from designing sustainable energy systems to building resilient infrastructure to developing advanced healthcare technologies, require engineers who can think across disciplinary boundaries and bring multiple kinds of expertise to bear on complex problems. A general engineering education builds that integrative capacity in a way that narrow specialisation cannot. At the University of Sheffield, this four-year, full-time degree is taught across seven engineering departments by world-leading academics, giving you genuine breadth of engagement with the full range of engineering disciplines before you choose a specialism in your later years. You will develop both academic knowledge and practical experience, encountering the core principles of mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, and materials engineering and understanding how they connect. A sandwich year is available, giving you the opportunity to spend a year in professional practice, and a year abroad is also an option, allowing you to study engineering in a different national context. A work placement is built into the programme alongside these options. The typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the strong academic expectations of a leading research university. General engineering graduates are sought after precisely because of their breadth. Many move into project management, systems engineering, consultancy, and leadership roles where the ability to communicate across engineering specialisms and manage complex technical programmes is the key skill. Others develop deeper expertise in a particular area after graduation, using the broad foundation as a springboard for specialisation. Chartered engineering status, postgraduate study, and doctoral research are all natural progressions, and Sheffield's strong reputation in engineering research means graduates are well placed for ambitious careers across the sector.
