MA French/Russian
About this course
French and Russian is a linguistically ambitious and culturally rich combination that gives you access to two of the world's most significant literary and political traditions. French connects you to the literature, philosophy, cinema, and cultural history of the French-speaking world, a tradition that has shaped European and global intellectual life for centuries. Russian opens the extraordinary literary heritage of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Bulgakov, as well as the history and culture of Russia and the post-Soviet space, one of the most consequential regions in contemporary geopolitics. At the University of Glasgow, French is taught across a wide range of topics from medieval France to contemporary culture, including French comics, French song, travel writing, and contemporary French history. You will develop both languages to a high level of proficiency through systematic language teaching alongside the study of literature, film, and cultural history in each tradition. The programme runs over five years full time and includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities. The typical entry tariff is 232 UCAS points, reflecting the demanding nature of the programme. Graduates from French and Russian programmes go on to careers in translation and interpreting, journalism, the civil service, European and international institutions, academia, international business, and intelligence and security. The combination of two major European languages from different language families is genuinely distinctive, and the cultural depth the degree develops is valued in a wide range of professional contexts. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in French studies, Russian studies, translation, comparative literature, and European politics.
