About this course
French and mathematics is an unusual combination that turns out to develop two of the most rigorous and transferable intellectual skill sets available in higher education. Mathematics trains you to think precisely, to construct proofs, and to reason about abstract structures. French gives you access to one of the world's great literary and intellectual traditions as well as a practical command of a language spoken by over 200 million people. The combination requires unusual breadth, but it produces graduates who can move with confidence between analytical and humanistic modes of thought. This five-year full-time programme at the University of Glasgow follows the Scottish honours model, giving you the time to develop genuine expertise across both disciplines. In mathematics you will cover pure and applied topics, building from foundational work in analysis, algebra, and calculus towards more advanced areas in your later years. In French you will develop your language skills to a high level of proficiency while also engaging with French and Francophone literature, linguistics, and culture. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement activity, and Glasgow's ambassador scheme gives you the opportunity to spend time in schools, experiencing teaching at first hand and developing workplace skills that complement your academic study. Graduates of French and mathematics programmes are genuinely versatile. The mathematical training opens doors in finance, data science, actuarial work, research, and technology, while French proficiency adds an international dimension that many employers in these sectors value highly. Teaching, at both secondary and higher education level, is another common destination, and the ambassador scheme experience at Glasgow gives you a head start in understanding that profession. Others use the combination to enter consulting, publishing, translation, or international business. Postgraduate study in either discipline, or in areas such as financial mathematics, linguistics, or education, is a natural continuation.
