French and Theological Studies is an intellectually unusual pairing that rewards precisely because the two disciplines illuminate each other in unexpected ways. French as an academic discipline goes well beyond language learning: it encompasses the literature, philosophy, history, and cultural production of France and the broader Francophone world, developing your capacity to engage with complex texts and ideas in another language and to think across cultural boundaries. Theological studies examines questions of ultimate concern, including the nature of God, the basis of ethics, the claims of religion, and the relationship between faith and reason, drawing on philosophy, history, and close reading of sacred and literary texts. At the University of St Andrews you will study across four years on a full-time programme, with a year abroad that takes your language learning to a high level of proficiency through sustained immersion in a French-speaking country. As an MA (Hons) student of French you will develop language and communications skills alongside the study of French and Francophone literature and culture, engaging with major authors, movements, and ideas from across the centuries. The theological studies element brings a complementary rigour: you will examine religious traditions and their intellectual foundations, consider philosophical arguments about religious belief, and develop the capacity to think carefully about questions that have occupied the most serious human minds for millennia.
