BA French and Spanish
About this course
French and Spanish is one of the most rewarding combinations available in modern languages, bringing together two of the world's most widely spoken and culturally significant languages. French is spoken by over 300 million people across five continents, the language of diplomacy, literature, and one of the world's largest economies. Spanish is the official language of twenty countries and the second most spoken language in the world by native speakers, with enormous cultural, economic, and political significance across Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Together they provide access to an extraordinary range of cultures, literatures, and professional opportunities. At University College London, this four-year full-time programme divides your time equally between the two languages. You will develop all four skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing, alongside study of cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics in both French and Spanish-speaking contexts. The wide variety of modules allows you to tailor the degree to your specific interests, building a programme that reflects your own intellectual priorities within the broad framework of both languages. The four-year structure gives you the time to develop genuine proficiency in both languages, something that the shorter programmes available elsewhere cannot fully achieve. You will develop linguistic competence, analytical and critical reading skills, the ability to work across cultural contexts, and the research and communication capabilities that a rigorous modern languages education provides. Graduates pursue careers in translation, interpreting, international business, diplomacy, journalism, publishing, law, education, and the cultural sector. The combination of French and Spanish is particularly valuable in multinational organisations, international organisations such as the EU and UN, and any commercial role with a European or Latin American dimension. Postgraduate study in modern languages, translation, or comparative literature is a well-established route.
