MA French and Social Anthropology
About this course
French and social anthropology is a degree that combines genuine bilingual competence with one of the most ambitious intellectual projects in the social sciences: the systematic study of the full diversity of human cultures and societies. French develops not just communication skills but deep familiarity with the intellectual, literary, and cultural traditions of the French-speaking world, which span France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, much of sub-Saharan Africa, and the Caribbean and Pacific. Social anthropology uses fieldwork, ethnography, and comparative analysis to understand how different societies organise kinship, religion, economics, politics, and meaning, and why the answers differ so profoundly across cultures. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time MA programme develops your French to a high level of proficiency through the study of French and Francophone language, literature, and culture, while also giving you a rigorous grounding in social anthropological theory and method. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, giving you the opportunity to live and study in a French-speaking environment, which is transformative for linguistic fluency and cultural understanding. A typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the high academic standard of this programme at one of Scotland's most prestigious universities. Graduates go on to work in international development, humanitarian organisations, cultural diplomacy, journalism, publishing, education, research, the civil service, and a wide range of internationally facing roles where cross-cultural competence and analytical depth are valued. The combination of French language skills with anthropological training is particularly distinctive in development and humanitarian contexts where understanding social structures in Francophone Africa or the Caribbean is essential. Postgraduate study in social anthropology, development studies, French, or area studies is a natural further step.
