About this course
French and social anthropology is a degree that combines genuine bilingual competence with one of the most ambitious intellectual projects in the social sciences: the systematic study of the full diversity of human cultures and societies. French develops not just communication skills but deep familiarity with the intellectual, literary, and cultural traditions of the French-speaking world, which span France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, much of sub-Saharan Africa, and the Caribbean and Pacific. Social anthropology uses fieldwork, ethnography, and comparative analysis to understand how different societies organise kinship, religion, economics, politics, and meaning, and why the answers differ so profoundly across cultures.
