About this course

French and philosophy is a degree that pairs mastery of one of the world's great intellectual languages with rigorous engagement with the fundamental questions that philosophy poses about knowledge, reality, ethics, and the nature of mind. France has produced some of the most significant philosophical and literary thought of the modern era, from Descartes and Pascal through the Enlightenment to Sartre, Beauvoir, Merleau-Ponty, and the post-structuralist thinkers whose influence on academic humanities across the world has been enormous. Studying French alongside philosophy means you encounter this tradition in its original language and within a broader disciplinary framework that gives you the analytical tools to engage with it rigorously. At Aberdeen this five-year full-time programme allows you to develop genuine depth in both disciplines across a longer arc than a standard degree. You will develop your French to a high level of written and spoken proficiency, engaging with literary, cultural, and intellectual texts from across the French-speaking world. In philosophy you will explore the major traditions and questions of the discipline, including epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and the philosophy of mind, developing the logical rigour and conceptual precision that philosophy demands. The two subjects reinforce each other: philosophical reading sharpens your engagement with literary and intellectual French texts, while immersion in French thought gives you examples and perspectives that enrich philosophical discussion. Graduates are exceptionally versatile. The combination of linguistic fluency, cultural knowledge, and philosophical rigour prepares you for careers in law, the civil service, international business, journalism, publishing, education, consultancy, and academic research. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, French studies, or comparative literature.
