MA French and Linguistics
About this course
French and linguistics together give you a deep understanding of a major world language and the scientific study of language as a human phenomenon. French carries one of the world's great literary and philosophical traditions and is spoken on every inhabited continent, making it one of the most globally useful languages a student can develop. Linguistics examines how language works at every level, from the sounds and words of individual languages to the structures of grammar, the ways meaning is constructed and communicated, and the social contexts in which language use varies and changes. At the University of Edinburgh this four-year, full-time programme develops your French to a level close to native fluency, building spoken and written proficiency alongside a broad cultural education that graduate employers value. The linguistics component introduces you to the core areas of the discipline, including phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and sociolinguistics, developing your analytical understanding of how French and other languages function as systems and as social practices. The two strands reinforce each other: linguistics sharpens your analytical awareness of the language you are learning, and French provides a rich case study for the application of linguistic theory. Graduates with French and linguistics are well positioned for careers that value both linguistic ability and analytical thinking. Many move into translation, interpreting, language teaching, or applied linguistics, and the linguistics training adds value in speech and language therapy, computational linguistics, and natural language processing roles in technology. Others build careers in international business, diplomacy, international organisations, publishing, journalism, and the cultural sector. Postgraduate study in linguistics, translation studies, French studies, or speech and language therapy is a natural next step for those who want to develop specialist expertise, and the programme provides strong foundations for doctoral research in any of these areas.
