MA French and Legal Studies
About this course
Studying French alongside legal studies is a combination that makes both intellectual and practical sense. Law is not merely a domestic affair: the legal systems of European countries are deeply interconnected through treaty frameworks, the European Convention on Human Rights, and a long history of cross-border trade, migration, and cooperation. French legal thought has contributed substantially to legal development across Europe and through French colonial history to legal systems in many other regions of the world. Studying both gives you linguistic access to a major European legal tradition and the analytical grounding to engage with law at an international level. At Aberdeen this five-year full-time programme includes an entire third year spent studying in a French-speaking country, an immersive year that is designed to take your language skills to a genuine level of competence and to give you direct exposure to legal and cultural life in a Francophone environment. You will develop a solid grounding in French language and culture alongside study of the law, including European law and its effects on everyday life in the UK and beyond. The programme engages with issues that are both topical and controversial, developing your ability to analyse legal problems in more than one linguistic and jurisdictional context. The combination of deep language training and legal understanding produces graduates with a profile that stands out clearly in competitive fields. Graduates of French and legal studies programmes find strong career options in European affairs, international law, the diplomatic service, legal practice in firms with European connections, and roles in international organisations and institutions. The language competency is a practical asset in any field where engagement with French-speaking counterparts, clients, or jurisdictions is part of the work. Some graduates go on to qualify as solicitors or advocates, while others move into European policy, public international law, translation and legal interpreting, or academic research in comparative or European law.
