About this course

French and geography is a combination that pairs advanced language study and cultural engagement with one of the broadest and most integrative of the academic disciplines. French opens access to the literary, intellectual and cultural traditions of France and the wider francophone world, developing linguistic proficiency alongside an understanding of French and francophone societies across Europe, Africa and beyond. Geography addresses the full range of relationships between human societies and the physical environments they inhabit, from climate, hydrology and geomorphology to urbanisation, migration and the political economy of development and resource use. At the University of St Andrews you will develop language and communication skills in French to a high level of proficiency through the study of French and francophone language, literature and culture, while also pursuing geography across its human and physical dimensions. The programme runs over four years full time, reflecting the Scottish honours degree structure, and includes a year abroad, which is both an essential component of your language development and an opportunity to experience geographic questions in a different national and environmental context. The combination of linguistic access to francophone environments and geographical fieldwork skills creates a distinctive and internationally oriented graduate profile. You will develop advanced French language skills alongside competence in geographical research methods, GIS, environmental analysis, social geography and the ability to engage with geographical questions across both physical and human dimensions. Graduates from French and geography programmes pursue careers in international development, environmental consultancy, the civil service and diplomatic service, international organisations with francophone connections, journalism, education, geography-related research and commercial roles with European or francophone dimensions. Postgraduate study in geography, international development, environmental science or French studies is also a natural route.
